Summary, etc. สำนักการระบายน้ำ กรุงเทพมหานคร ได้จัดทำหนังสือ ปูมตำนานงานระบายน้ำ สยามราชธานี ขึ้น เพื่อเสนอวิวัฒนาการของการระบายน้ำ ตั้งแต่อดีตจนถึงปัจจุบัน โดยเริ่มตั้งแต่สมัยกรุงสุโขทัยที่แม้จะตั้งอยู่บนที่ราบเชิงเขาและที่ราบระหว่างแม่น้ำ 3 สาย คือ ปิง ยม และน่าน แต่ ก็ยังจัดว่าเป็นเขตแห้งแล้ง พระมหากษัตริย์แห่งกรุงสุโขทัยทรงวางแนวทางการแก้ไขปัญหาอย่างยั่งยืนเพื่อให้มีน้ำกินน้ำใช้ตลอดปี สมัยกรุงศรีอยุธยาที่มีแม่น้ำล้อม 3 สาย ก็มีการขุดคลองเพื่อระบายน้ำและชักน้ำจากแม่น้ำมาใช้ประโยชน์ภายในเกาะเมือง จนกระทั่งกรุง รัตนโกสินทร์ พระมหากษัตริย์ได้ทรงวางแนวพระราชดำริในการพัฒนาและเสริมสร้างความมั่นคงของบ้านเมืองด้วยการวางระบบโครงข่าย สายน้ำให้ปรากฎอย่างเป็นรูปธรรม ทั้งขุดลอกคลองเดิมและคลองใหม่ เป็นการสร้างเส้นทางคมนาคมที่ครอบคลุมถึงหัวเมืองต่างๆควบคู่ไป กับการส่งเสริมการเกษตรอีกทางหนึ่งด้วย
